The Fun of CCG Card Games

The Fun of CCG Card Games

In the world of collectible card games, there have been several games that have entered the gaming arena, only to be crushed by the one collectible card game (CCG) that has stood the test of time and that game is called Magic the Gathering.

Wizards of the Coast is the company responsible for this ccg juggernaut, and they are also the creative force behind one of the most recognized role-playing gaming franchises ever called Dungeons and Dragons.

Magic the Gathering was first introduced to gaming geeks everywhere back in 1993. Created by mathematics professor Richard Garfield, Wizards of the Coast produced and distributed the card game on that date and the demand for the game has only increased over the years.

What makes this and other ccg games so much fun and interesting is the ability to sell then on auction sites such as ebay and also on Amazon. Some of the reasons that this is true include:
• Beautiful artwork
• Card rarity
• Foil art
• New set releases
• Highly Collectible

There have also been other ccg card games that have either continued to release new sets of cards or due to economic matters, the discontinuation of production runs have seen many up and coming ccg card games fall by the wayside.

A few of the more memorable ccg games include such recognized names as:
• The Lord of The Rings ccg based on the movie trilogy
• The Versus ccg game that featured DC and Marvel Comic characters
• Rage was a short lived card game that was based on werewolf pacts
• Star Trek received the ccg treatment and featured all of the main characters from the star trek universe.

The only other ccg game that at this point still stands the test of time wouldn’t be a game that you would immediately think of, and that game is the Japanese import Pokemon. Sounds less fun than my usual disc golf north carolina day.

Pokemon is a ccg game based on the popular video game and Saturday morning cartoons here in the United States. The game features many of the colorful characters from the game including the popular and easily recognizable character Pikachu.

The main reason for the continued popularity of both of these ccg games is the fact that each set is tied to a storyline. In the case of Magic the Gathering, the game over the years has continued to flesh out its ongoing story-lines when introducing a new set (or block) of cards.

Over the years we have seen the game of Magic introduce players to different “Planes” of existence in the world of magic, and each time that a new world is discovered, we are exposed to new creatures, and humanoid races.

The other reason why these games have become so popular is because of the marketing efforts by Wizards of the Coast. Wizards is the publisher for both games and they sponsor special gaming events such as “Friday Night Magic.” They also hold special competitions for the game which include their “Grand Prix” tournaments held all over the world. Only the best are able to compete here, and there are cash prizes and trophies to win along with worldwide recognition in ccg gaming circles.

When it comes to playing a ccg game though, you don’t have to be a world class player to enjoy the game; all you need are a few friends on a Friday or Saturday evening, a new block of cards and the thrill of beating your friends at the very last moment and winning the game.
